There are some great Hotels in Hakuba. From 5 star to 3 star properties there is usually something for every budget. Most have fine dining and a bar area inside   Many of the hotels will have concierge to help you with any questions or activity bookings you may require. Shuttle buses will also be available. Pensions are like Westernized Japanese accommodation or the other way round Japanese western countryside accommodation. Sometimes called chalet or lodges. There are usually about 5-10 rooms with western style rooms. Sometimes you might find one Japanese room or a Japanese /western fusion. There is usually a common dining and lounge with a small bar. Some will have a private bathroom while others will have a public bathroom with a large shared bath. Breakfast and dinner are usually included in the price. Expect shared dormitories, basic facilities with some private and family rooms. Most backpackers will have an open kitchen. Like backpackers everywhere, they are the best way to meet fellow travellers and certainly the cheapest accommodation around. Not too many condominiums available in Hakuba but plenty of rental cottages and apartments. Here you can expect all mod cons with bedding and cooking requirements. Make sure when you book you check any hidden costs such as bedding, towels etc.  Some apartments are located in the accommodation areas but others can be further afield, and without transport can be very inconvenient. Minshuku are similar but more modest affairs, usually lower in price and without the attentive service. Generally though, you will have to put out your own bedding and tidy it away in the morning. Because some minshuku are no more than a family home run as a guesthouse on the side, you should expect to respect relatively early curfews and make certain common-sense allowances.
