Hakuba first appeared as a mountain resort around 1900 by The father of mountaineering in Japan, Rev. Walter Weston. Before this the Japanese Alps were considered sacred and mysterious and climbed only Buddhist monks for soul searching aesthetic training. Skiing was introduced in Japan by the Austrians, and soon after that skiing in Hakuba became a popular activity in Hakuba.
Situated in Nagano and about 250km north of Tokyo. The area is dominated by the 3000m peaks of the Northern Alps. The local population is about 10,000 but this swells to ten times that amount during peak times with the influx of tourist from both Japan and abroad. There are two distinct season, winter and green season. Both are busy with different activities
There are heaps of events held throughout the year in Hakuba, ranging from small and quirky local festivals, to world renowned sporting events. Music festivals are also hugely popular during the summer months..
